There are these books, which I believe should be read by everyone, for the power, the message, the beautiful stories they hold. And this book is surely one of them. I believe, this book should be more rated, more read, as it talks about something that is a deep part of our society’s mindset, and which really has to be changed. This book talks about Honor, what it really is, and what our country people, especially from tribal areas perceive it to be. About the gruesome custom of honor killings. How people just easily kill anyone in the name of honor, following their own customs and laws. They kill even over a small fact, that a woman wants to marry someone of her choice, while her family wants to find a suitor for her, of their own choice. Honor killings are one of the greatest acts of violence against women carried out in Pakistan, and this book throws a deeper light on that issue, as the one killed in the name of honor was the author’s own beloved cousin…

This beautiful memoir is written by Khalida Brohi, a brave young lady hailing from the provinces of Sindh and Balochistan. This lady, who grew up in a rich cultural environment, takes us on a journey where one can get a glimpse of the beautiful cultures these regions hold. Her story is beautifully described, and powerful.  The reason that made her become an activist, and set on this difficult journey, and eventually writes this book, was the unjust honor killing of her beloved cousin. That case burned a spark within her, which she carries to this day.

This book tells us about her journey, how she took on the task of spreading skills among tribal women, to empower them, to change the thoughts of people regarding the very definition of Honor. And she talks about how she got to this fate, how her father empowered her throughout. Despite the fact that she was born in rural areas, her determination to make a change took her to other parts of the world, which helped her in grooming, forming strategies, and eventually take this path. And there is much more in this book, stories to warm your heart, break your heart. Stories to provide you courage. A must-read!
