Author: Malcolm Gradwell
Outlier (noun): Something that is situated away from or classed differently from a main or related body.
So, this is a really unique book, that tells success stories of outliers, that is, those people who were/are more successful than others of their fellows. And this is not that typical, motivational book that would emphasize only on hard work and all, but you would find real-life examples of how success is related to other factors as well, like, opportunities and how one avails them, the cultural norms and legacy of an individual, constant practice and effort, upbringing method and much more! The book talks about stories of famous people like Bill Gates, Bill Joy, The Beatles, and analyzes what these people had, that made them so successful.
It is our norm these days, that we associate success to innate abilities, to high IQ and factors, without much knowledge. But the book proves that these matters are not that simple…
“We are so caught in the myths of the best and the brightest and the self-made that we think outliers spring naturally from the earth”
I really liked the style of the author, the way he wrote this whole book that is a real page-turner! The style goes like this: The author comes with some extraordinary scenario, develops curiosity regarding why things happen, and how, then, he would throw a really unique explanation for the scenario, and you’d go like, ” Hey! I didn’t expect that”. But at the end of each chapter, here you are, having learned something new, that would break the norm of how you think about success. The book is well researched, and that makes it more engaging and thought-provoking.
I must say, this book should be read by all those who want to succeed, which means, it should be read by all!
